Freed refugee restarting life in America


A refugee who was detained by Australia for nine years is now free and will be starting his new life in the United States.

Mehdi Ali was 15 when he fled Iran and arrived on a boat from Indonesia to Christmas Island and spent time at the same Melbourne hotel as Novak Djokovic, where his story became known.  

Mr Ali posted on social media he was freed from detention but wanted more to be released.

“I won’t be happy until all my friends are get released from detention,” he wrote.

“It’s not freedom until we are all free.”
