Lush QLD property used by doco icon David Attenborough for sale

A North Queensland B&B that once hosted legendary broadcaster and biologist David Attenborough has hit the market, and it is also just a short drive to an iconic pub.

Located at Rossville near Cooktown, Mungumby Lodge has been listed for sale by expressions of interest.

Owned by the same family for two decades, Mungumby Lodge was established in 1988 and used as a base by Attenborough during filming of his documentary, First Life, back in 2010.

The production saw Attenborough explore the origins of life, using some of the earliest fossils to search for the earliest animals and how they evolved.

And it is easy to see why Attenborough chose Mungumby Lodge as the perfect base in Australia – it is on the doorstep of Cape York, often called Australia’s final frontier, and the world wonder, Great Barrier Reef.

“There are many B&B’s throughout Australia yet only a few manage to attract and host Sir David Attenborough, then develop, maintain and grow a legacy for years into the future,” the listing by Hamish Haslop of Real Estate Downunder says.

“There are rare endemic species that live here and (that are) of high interest to the public.”

Surrounded by rainforest

The stunning 3.88ha property boasts a homestead and 10 guest B & Bs set among lush rainforest, creeks and waterfalls.

“All buildings are hand crafted out of rainforest hardwoods,” the listing says.

“With 10 cabins this property allows for a range of room options and expansion, catering particularly to the well travelled nature lover.”

The pub, established in 1875, was listed for sale last year, and is visited by thousands of travellers, including this author, every year.
