What was supposed to be a post promoting NBA superstar Klay Thompson’s arrival has gone viral for a very different reason as AFL fans spotted Alastair Clarkson heading to the playoffs game.
AFL fans couldn’t believe their eyes when former Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson was spotted brushing shoulders with an NBA star on Thursday.
The four-time premiership coach was surprisingly moved on by the Hawks last year as they accelerated their coaching succession plan and appointed Sam Mitchell as his replacement.

And Clarkson has clearly been making the most of his time away from AFL, judging by a video doing the rounds on social media.
The NBA’s official Twitter account posted a clip of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson arriving at San Francisco’s Chase Centre for Game 5 of the first round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets.
The superstar shooter was seen arriving in the bowels of the stadium on his bike before walking straight through the security checkpoint.
But eagle-eyed fans couldn’t help but notice he walked right past Clarkson, who was putting his bag and belongings through the security scanner.
It’s likely Clarkson was attending the game as a guest of Golden State — it’s believed he has been working with Warriors coach Steve Kerr, with whom he is good friends.
AFL fans couldn’t get enough of Clarkson’s surprising appearance.
Clarkson has been busy since his highly successful 17-year coaching stint at Hawthorn came to an end last year.
The 53-year-old has said he wanted to travel to the US to undertake some study and research by spending time with some of the best sporting franchises in the world.
His appearance at the Warriors game may well have been part of this scouting mission.
Clarkson has also been leading the push for Tasmania to have its own AFL team introduced into the competition.
Last year he turned down an offer to coach Carlton but has left the door wide open to become a senior coach again at another AFL club as soon as 2023.
